Exactly a year ago today (as Facebook reminded me), a stray dog came into my life and stole my heart. My husband and I were at a school cycling event when we noticed this scruffy stink ball. It was freezing and all he wanted was a warm spot to sleep in. Every time the sun would come out, he would stop and make himself as comfortable as he could. I hated how the people ignored him, or chased him away because of his smell. Did people not realise that it was our fault that this poor soul was in the position that he was? Us; the human race [which is allegedly the smartest race] that abandons animals because “it’s too much work”, or whatever the reason might be. It’s times like these when I wish I could use my stick of knowledge.
My heart ached for this dog. And I didn’t even bother to ask my husband whether we could take him home that day because he would always remind me – in the kindest way possible – that it’s not possible to take every abandoned dog back home with us. But that day was different because my husband turned to me and asked me if we could take him home.
After deciding to name him Vélo (the French word for bicycle) and a week of fun, we found his owner. There are many more stories and opinions that I can share about this experience, but today I want to take the moment and thank this dog for coming into my life. Thank you for reminding me what humanity really means. Thank you for teaching me: that to move on, you must trust again. Even if you’re scared out of your wits. You showed me what it means to love unconditionally, and that when you show you care, it can change someone’s life. Vélo, thank you for being a part of my life. You stole a piece of my heart and in return, you gave me yours.
