In life, we go through times when negativity seems to follow us and destroy our hope. When that happens, we easily drown in our negative thoughts and accept it as the way of life.
While we can’t always control what is happening to us, we can control how we respond to it. And I know I’m making it sound easier than it actually is! But it can be done. It’s like creating a new habit. It will be extremely difficult in the beginning, but with (a lot of) time, it can become like second nature.
You have to seek to create your own positive environment to become motivated and achieve your goals. So, here are my eight tips to get (and stay) motivated:
1. GET SERIOUS
Up to now, your dream has just been a thought passing your mind. But it’s up to you to make up your mind and go all the way.
Steve Harvey compared this journey of making up your mind to jumping off of a cliff and relying on a parachute (your goals) to break your fall. And if you wait for the ‘right time’ to jump, you may never do it.
Stop wasting your time. Get serious and take the leap of faith.
2. SEE YOURSELF AS THE BEST
Like the saying, “mind over matter” suggests, you will only notice an improvement in your life when you believe in yourself. Keep visualising yourself as the best and you will give your best.
3. KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Knowing your limits doesn’t mean you should stop what you’re doing when it gets tough. It means it will teach you what skills or traits are holding you back.
Determining your limits will give you the opportunity to find out what you need to improve on and will help prevent you from getting stuck. This gives you a better chance to reach your goals.
4. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t give your goals the attention and time it needs. So make sure you take care of your health – mentally and physically – by eating healthy, exercising, and getting enough rest.
5. A POSITIVE SUPPORT GROUP
No matter what society tells you, you’re allowed to remove yourself from toxic people. There might be one or two that you can’t avoid completely, but you can manage the time you spend with them.
6. GET GOING
If you want to get somewhere, get moving. It’s not going to come to you. When you get an idea, do it. Don’t wait! Take chances and turn your decisions into actions.
7. CELEBRATE YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Rewards play an important part in staying motivated. So take the time to celebrate your accomplishments – big or small – and reward yourself every time you reach a goal.
Don’t brush off your accomplishments as small or unimportant. Think about it and celebrate it within the following 10 days. It could be anything from going away the weekend or treating yourself to some frozen yoghurt.
8. BE NICE TO YOURSELF
Life is already tough, you don’t have to be too. Control your inner-dialogue and practice positive self-talk. Talk to yourself the way you want to be and don’t just focus on who you are at the moment.
Remind yourself that you’re the best and that you can do it. Even when you don’t believe it, keep reminding yourself. Doing this doesn’t mean you’re lying to yourself. It means that you’re reminding yourself of the truth that you’re capable of more than you know.
The more you persist, the more you become unstoppable in the pursuit of your dreams.
