There are certain things that only creative people will understand, as they see the world through their own lens and are often misunderstood. But the truth is: creative people are different for a reason!
Different studies have confirmed that a creative person’s brain has structural differences. These differences cause them to think and act uniquely; giving them their creative flair! Or what other people may consider as weird – which, by the way, I no longer consider as an insult because all I’m hearing is, “I wish I could live outside the box like you.”
Even though creative people are unique and different in their own way, we still share similarities. And speaking from personal experience, here are 10 things only creative people will understand:
1. WE INVENTED PROCRASTINATION
I’m blessed with the talent of procrastination. And it’s not that I won’t get the job done, but my levels of creativity and motivation are sky high so close to a deadline. For some of us, the thrill of the rush is what helps us nail the job!
2. WE OVERTHINK EVERYTHING
A creative mind is a non-stop machine fuelled by curiosity and inspiration. You are constantly looking for the next big idea or thinking of ways to change the world. And when something bad happens, you look for a reason or a lesson that you can change into a piece of art.
No matter what you’re busy with, you’re thinking and making plans for all different kinds of things. Creative people might be physically doing one thing, but their minds are on a completely different adventure.
3. WE STRUGGLE INTERNALLY
Even though I don’t like admitting this, most creative people like myself, live on the edge of joy and depression. Our sensitive hearts are perhaps the trait that makes us feel the most misunderstood; fuelled by emotions rather than logic.
Logic makes little sense to creative people. Every decision we make comes from the core of our souls while we live in a world run by our feelings and emotions.
4. WE ARE DEEPLY INTUITIVE
Although science struggles to explain how the creative process exactly works, creative people have proven to be in tune with reading and understanding their surroundings on a deeper level. We follow our instincts and rely on it as a source of inspiration.
5. WE NEED TIME TO FIND OUR SOULS
For creativity to strike, we sometimes need to be alone and escape reality. Being caught up in your own mind helps you to create something beautiful without the pressure of someone watching or judging. Some might see this as pushing people away, but for creative people, it’s like making that much-needed stop to refill the fuel tank.
6. WE GET LOST IN TIME
Time loses its meaning when you are trapped in your creative world of dreaming and creating. So, until we’ve transferred that creativity into the real world, there is no rest for the wicked. And even sometimes no eating or drinking!
7. WE DON’T WANT TO GROW UP
No creative person wants to lose their sense of wonder. And seeing the world through the eyes of a child helps you achieve just that! For us, life is more than waking up, going to work, and making money. It’s about the mystery and adventure that comes along with true living.
8. WE CHALLENGE THE STATUS QUO
I’ve been called a feminist and activist many times throughout my life. And it’s not that I’m offended, I just struggle to understand why my behaviour needs to be labelled in order to make sense. If you need to give someone an ‘ist’-label, how about “humanist”?
The truth is, we can’t take everything at face value and must stand up for what we believe in – which is why creative people are different. Their ability to ask what if and why not is what can change the world; redefining what is possible.
9. WE DON’T CHASE MONEY
We don’t care about the papers and statements. You just want to do work that makes you happy and keeps you inspired. If that means giving up a stable income and choosing the path of a freelancer, so be it! For us, it’s all about staying true to ourselves.
10. WE FOLLOW OUR HEARTS
In each creative person’s heart, there is something they feel passionate about and lights their soul on fire. They are motivated by creating things and reaching people. And even when you fail and the world tells you to quit, you will never be able to settle for a job that doesn’t feed your soul.
