The Beginning of Aunthood

I’ve been blessed with one of the best titles you can get. Yes, I’m an aunt! And even though I’ve only had this title for four months, there are a few things that came along with being an aunt that caught me by surprise.

1. SEEING YOUR NEPHEW OR NIECE FOR THE FIRST TIME TURNS YOU INTO A BLUBBERING FOOL

I knew I was excited to meet my nephew, but I thought it was only moms and grandmothers who cried when they saw babies. I mean, aunts are supposed to be the cool ones. We’re supposed to spoil them with cool presents and candy when their mom isn’t looking, right?

Well, lies. All lies. My eyes saw it as an opportunity to embarrass me with this unnecessary crying business. And don’t get me started on the emotional roller coaster of every cute photo.

2. YOU WANT TO BUY EVERY CUTE ITEM OF BABY CLOTHING

He may already have 50 outfits, but it’s never as cute as the one you just found in the store. Wait, what? I only have R200 in my banking account? Good thing this outfit is only R150.

3. YOU FEEL STRANGELY PROTECTIVE OVER A CHILD YOU HAVEN’T KNOWN FOR LONG

When I hear someone coughing or sneezing, I’m like a turtle disappearing into my shell made of hand sanitizer. Not only am I afraid of getting sick and not being able to spend time with my cute nephew, but I’m also not letting you in the same room as him.

4. YOU LOVE THAT KID MORE THAN ANYTHING

I didn’t know that from the first moment I held him, I would be hooked. I didn’t know that I would work him into every conversation, just so I can share his adorable pictures. I didn’t know that his smile would become one of my favourite things to see. And I didn’t know – not at all – that I would be able to love this tiny human as much as I do.

I may just be in the beginning of my aunthood, but I think it’s safe to say that becoming an aunt is pretty awesome! So here is to my new and favourite title: aunt.
