From farm-fresh organic vegetables, grass-fed biltong, or just a good old-fashioned pancake, the food markets in Pretoria have you covered. It’s also a great idea when you don’t know what to do for the next date or family outing.

Here is my pick of fun food markets to visit in Pretoria. With an array of delicious treats waiting for you, trust me when I say, it’s best to go on an empty stomach.

DEEP ROOTS NIGHT MARKET

Where? 78 Storrar Drive, Groenkloof

When? Every first Friday of the month (4 pm to late)

The Deep Roots Market has something for everyone. As the trendy, fun, relatively new kid on the block, you’ll be able to choose from an assortment of food. From Belgian waffles on a stick to delicious Greek cuisine.

Sounds good? Then get your friends and go relax under the colourful canopies and string lights.

PRETORIA BANTING MARKET

Where? Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, 2 Cussonia Avenue

When? On the first Saturday of the month (9 am to 1 pm)

The Pretoria Banting Market has a strict selection process and only those who stick to the banting rules are allowed. So you can expect almost everything to be free of sugar and wheat.

You can choose from banting waffles and ice cream, grass-fed biltong, a variety of dairy products and bread. And if you have questions regarding banting, a Real Meal Revolution coach will be nearby to give you answers.

VEGAN FOOD FAIR

Where? Klitsgras Drumming, Plot 62 Garsfontein Road, Tierpoort

When? On the second Sunday of every month (9 am to 4 pm)

Vegans, vegetarians, and like-minded people can rejoice. Pretoria finally has a food market dedicated to plant-based eating.

You’ll find a variety of egg-free baked goods and a fully stocked bar at the Vegan Food Fair. But there isn’t just food to enjoy, there are also cruelty-free cosmetics stalls and activities to keep you busy. The activities include live music, kids’ games, yoga, Henna art, and – relax those shoulders – a masseuse.

MARKET @ THE SHEDS

Where? 381 Helen Joseph Street, Central Pretoria

When? On the last Saturday of the month (11 am to 6 pm)

As one of the younger siblings of Pretoria food markets, this is where the cool kids hang out. Their edgy atmosphere keeps regulars coming back for more.

A visit to the Market @ The Sheds, not only promises good food but also art exhibitions and live music. You can enjoy Congolese cuisine and Galo’s guilt-free dessert. And the banting carrot cake and coffee from Urban Barista are some of the regulars’ favourites.

PRETORIA BOEREMARK

Where? 665 Moreleta Street, Silverton

When? On Saturdays at 5:30 am until the produce runs out.

Loyal regulars are ready at 5:30 am when the Pretoria Boeremark opens. And with a reputation for being as good as the day it started – more than 25 years ago – it’s possible to see why!

You will enjoy true South African dishes like melkkos, homemade vetkoeks, kaiings (fried pork fat), and decent boeretroos (coffee). And with the freshest produce sold at incredible prices, it won’t be difficult to fill your basket.
